WPR welcomes the Northern Stock Horse Organization!

WPR is excited to announce our newest partner in Para Reining - The Northern Stock Horse Organization! The NSHO’s mission is to provide opportunities for fun, safe, economical competition with a focus on membership growth, while providing additional competition opportunities at premier events for members. They are headquartered in Amery, WI and NSHO will be offering their first WPR classes at an event June 27th and 28th, 2015 at Rimoe Ranch in New Richmond, WI! Grade 1-4 classes will be held on Sunday, June 28th.

NSHO is a nonprofit organization originally developed to provide inexpensive schooling opportunities for Open and Non-Pro riders, to introduce new members to more of the performance horse classes, and most importantly to develop a positive healthy horse show attitude with competitors while preparing them to go to bigger organizations.  NSHO prides itself on being a compliment to each person's show calendar, rather than a replacement for the NRCHA, NRHA, NCHA, or breed shows already they may already be attending.

WPR is excited to be partnering with such a great grass roots organization!

To read more about NSHO please visit their Facebook page and to view more about the event including the showbill, please visit the WPR Calendar of events.

World Para Reining Classes Provide Exciting Addition to Las Vegas High Roller Reining Classic

The High Roller Reining Classic is pleased to announce that it will be hosting two divisions of WPR/AQHA approved Para Reining on Thursday, September 17th at 6:00 pm during its annual show at the South Point facility in Las Vegas. Bob Haley of Bob’s Custom Saddles is providing two trophy saddles to be awarded to the winners of each class.

“We’ve worked with Arizona Veterans and wheel chair-bound riders in the past,” notes Bob. “I plan to be in Las Vegas to award these saddles personally, and Bob’s will also be customizing them individually to suit the WPR class winner’s particular disability.”

When WPR creator, Lisa Coulter was asked to Chair the Para Reining board for Equine Canada, she was intrigued and interested. “We had been talking about Para Reining as a potential organization for a number of years,” she says. “It wasn’t a new idea for me.  However, in 2013 when I was asked to coach the Para Reining demonstration at the AQHA Championships in Oklahoma City, and then a second demonstration at the Kentucky Cup in 2014, I knew that it was time to get to work and really make this happen.”

Thanks to everyone’s hard work and dedication Para Reining will be incorporated within the Reining Committee of the FEI. The Reining Committee will work closely together with the Para Equestrian Committee of the FEI, to get this started and we are looking forward to great things to come!

Canadian Para Olympian gives reining a 'spin'

Canadian Paralympic gold and silver medalist Lauren Barwick traded her dressage saddle in for a western one the weekend of Feb 21st and 22nd and joined WPR  at the Florida Reining Classic.

Lauren on Western Whiz is all smiles after 2 great runs!

Training and competing in Para dressage has taken priority while preparing for World Games for Lauren, but the Florida Reining Classic provided her with the perfect opportunity to take reining for a 'spin.'  Lauren and Western Whiz scored a 71 in Sunday's competition and was reserve champion in the class, on the heels of champion Briana Bartlett and Chrome Tejon, an experienced reining partnership.

"It was a bit of an adrenalin rush as my second ride was me in the arena competing... " said Lauren, "I didn't know wether to smile, salute or wave to the judge when I came in!  I remember riding around saying in my head 'Im doing it... I think Im doing it' after the last slide all I could do was giggle, 'Yup i think i just did it.'   The other great thing was there were people hooting and hollering on the side lines that I had no clue who they were but what fun that is to have people supporting you and showing it while your out there doing your best!"

Lauren remarked, "I really think reining will be a great addition to the Para athlete sports, the horses movements and smooth gates of the quarter horse are much more forgiving on a body with a physical disability."

Lisa Coulter, the founder and driving force behind World Para Reining, said, " Everyone at WPR and the Florida Reining Classic was blown away by Lauren. It was totally forgotten that she had mounted that horse from a wheelchair. Lauren loped a full pattern, spun four fast spins, ran and slid with big roll backs and she had never been in the Reining pen - it was amazing! Lauren's courage is tremendous. Her ability as a natural rider is unattainable. Some people are born with it. Its impossible for most able bodied riders to obtain Lauren's skill and connection with a horse. This proved to me the place Para Reining has in competition, and none of us will forget Lauren mastering this. If Lauren continues in Reining I see more gold in her future!!"

Congratulations Lauren! We hope to see you in the pen again soon!

Inaugural AQHA Para-Reining Classes Set

The first AQHA and World Para Reining para-reining classes are slated for January 30-31 during the Arizona Sun Circuit.

The first American Quarter Horse Association-approved para-reining classes are slated for January 30-31 at the Arizona Sun Circuit in Scottsdale. The classes will also be approved by World Para Reining and the first event in the WPR series. A championship saddle, top-10 awards and world champion title will be awarded at the end of the series.

Para-reining made its debut during the 2013 AQHA World Championship Show, and interest in the sport continues to grow. For 2014, AQHA adopted para-reining rules in collaboration with USA Reining and the National Reining Horse Association. Those rules were revised after the 2014 test year and with the cooperation of the United States Para-Equestrian Association with the goal of making para-reining a nationally recognized sport in 2015.

For more information about the first AQHA- and WPR-approved classes, contact World Para Reining at worldparareining@hotmail.com or visit www.suncircuit.com.
